Cooking up community spirit

Healthy food builds strong bodies and it needs to be accompanied by lessons that show kids how to nourish their brains and minds. Each of us must know that we have the power to sow and reap opportunities for ourselves, to heal our wounds and to believe in ourselves.

When Community Cook Up began all those years ago, we could not have imagined that we’d cook up the community spirit that we share today. Our first Cook Up happened in response to a devastating fire that destroyed countless homes in IY.

The joint initiative between Community Cook Up IY, South African Police Service (SAPS), Community Cohesion and Love in a Bowl engages with a group of vulnerable youths that we observed to be at risk of violent behaviour. It is as inspiring for us as it is for those that are brave enough to participate.

A police station willing to prevent harmful behaviour rather than punish it, an organisation that builds cohesion – and a community kitchen feeding bodies and minds.

Today we are proud to celebrate the powerful effects of positivity in our community!
The friendships and bonds that were born from those ashes continue to flourish every Friday and to build diverse connections that nurture a stronger community.

Thank you for your support.
